Do you know why we feel fresh and relaxed while we’re in the water?
A fun fact is our body has a dive reflex, a natural response of most air-breathing vertebrates. This is what happens to your body when you’re swimming, freediving, scuba diving or even just dunking and splashing the water to your face.
1. First, Slow heart rate (Bradycardia) – Once you’re underwater or just only splashing water on your face, your heart rate will drop to save as much oxygen as possible. That’s why you feel calm and relaxed.
Besides, if you’re holding your breath in the water or underwater (Freediving) this is what happens to your body
2. Your fingertips and toes feel different (Peripheral vasoconstriction) – Our body will decrease and eventually stop supplying blood and oxygen to hands, arms, legs, and feet as much as it can to save them for the central core organs such as the brain, lungs, and heart.
3. Blood shift – The blood system will supply blood to the lungs to secure it from the lung’s squeezing pressure.
4. Spleen effect – Our spleen will increase red blood cells to carry more oxygen to the body system.
5. Don’t pee in your wetsuit – The dive reflex will activate a feeling that you want to go to pee. Control your bladder so your wetsuit doesn’t stink.
Our body is so fantastic that you would have no idea how capable your body is, right!!? Step out of your comfort zone and start to do something new to improve yourself for you. Diving is one of the things that could change your life and perspective. If you are curious… come join us and see which direction the water flows to you!
