Have you ever imagined an underwater art gallery? On the southwest coast of Koh Tao, at a dive site called Tao Thong, a beautiful sculpture rests quietly beneath the waves. This piece, called Ocean Utopia, is an artificial reef artwork created by Valerie Goutard (Sculpture Val), a talented sculptor and passionate diver. Val has visited Koh Tao as many of us do, to dive and explore its underwater world. Like countless others, she fell deeply in love with the island’s beauty and spirit. To return something back to Koh Tao in her way, she created this sculpture to become a home for marine life.

Placing this masterpiece and transforming it into an underwater artificial reef was no simple task. We had to choose the perfect spot, one that would protect the marine ecosystem and follow the guidelines of Thailand’s Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR). Every decision mattered: the depth, the currents, the surrounding coral, and how marine life could use the structure as their new home.
In March 2016, the sculpture was carefully deployed in a protected and restricted area south of Koh Tao, opposite Tao Thong Bay. This site was chosen for its safety, beauty, and role in coral reef preservation and regeneration, a place where art and nature could grow together.
It was a true team effort. Valerie, her husband, and the dedicated New Heaven Reef Conservation Team worked hand in hand, turning her vision into reality. The process wasn’t easy, as it involved long days, heavy lifting, scuba diving, and free diving many times, along with plenty of sweat and tears. But when the sculpture finally settled into its new underwater home, we knew it was worth every challenge.

Nowadays, at 12 meters deep,Ocean Utopia now rests just off the reef, on a quiet patch of sand at the Tao Thong dive site. Year after year, it has transformed into a home for sea anemones, pipefish, shrimp, and many other marine creatures. Like an oasis in the desert, it offers shelter to life beneath the waves and wonder to those who come to see it.
For scuba divers and freedivers exploring Koh Tao, Ocean Utopia is more than just a dive site. It’s a meeting point between art and nature, a living reminder that creativity can serve conservation, and that beauty can help protect our oceans. As the years pass, coral will continue to grow, fish will dart between the figures, and the sculpture will keep evolving, a timeless symbol of Val’s passion and the ocean’s endless story, a living tribute to her love of art and the underwater world.

New Heaven Reef Conservation team often visit the dive site Taothong and Ocean Utopia monthly if the weather conditions allowed due to the survey and research purpose. If you are planning to visit this underwater art gallery, it’s your chance to witness how art, conservation, and the underwater world grow in harmony.
A heartfelt thank you to Val, to theNew Heaven Reef Conservation team, and to everyone whose hands and hearts shaped this dream. We carry your vision forward, nurturing this living artificial reef so that your legacy of marine conservation will continue to grow, beneath the waves, for generations to come.
