Koh Tao Artificial Reef and Ocean Conservation
Koh Tao is famous for its clear water, colorful coral reefs, and incredible marine life. But beyond the beautiful dive sites, many people don’t realize how much effort goes into protecting the island’s underwater ecosystem.
For years, New Heaven Dive School and New Heaven Reef Conservation have been actively involved in reef conservation in Koh Tao.
What Is an Artificial Reef?
An artificial reef is a human-made structure placed underwater to create new habitat for marine life. These structures can be made from specially designed reef modules, concrete structures, or other environmentally safe materials.
Over time, corals, algae, and other marine organisms settle on the structure, turning it into a living reef that can support fish, crustaceans, and many other sea creatures.
Why Are Artificial Reefs Important?
Artificial reefs can provide several benefits:
Create new habitat for marine life
Reduce pressure on natural reefs
Support coral growth and reef recovery
Increase biodiversity
Provide educational opportunities for conservation diving
In areas where reefs have been damaged by storms, pollution, or other human impacts, artificial reefs can become part of a larger restoration effort.

New Heaven and the Artificial Reef in Koh Tao
At New Heaven Dive School, conservation is more than just a dive activity; it’s a way of connecting with the ocean. Through New Heaven Reef Conservation Program, divers can learn about coral ecology, reef monitoring, marine debris, and restoration projects around Koh Tao.
As part of our ongoing reef conservation in Koh Tao, our New Heaven team has also built and deployed several artificial reefs in Koh Tao. These structures have been placed at Hin Ngam, Aow Luek. Chalok Bay, Tao Thong Bay, and other dive sites around the island. The artificial reefs provide additional habitat for marine life and new surfaces for corals and other reef organisms to grow.
Like any reef, artificial reefs take time to develop. As marine life gradually moves in and corals begin to settle, these structures become part of the underwater ecosystem, supporting biodiversity and creating valuable learning opportunities for conservation diving.
One of the exciting parts of the program is learning about artificial reef projects in Koh Tao and how they can help create additional habitat for marine life. For many of our students, visiting these sites is a chance to see how restoration projects evolve and understand the important role divers can play in protecting the ocean.
