Did you know? “King Kong Rock” has not got its name from the shape and form of the rock that is similar to the posture of King Kong the mammal, but it is named after the guy who discovered this dive site. His name was “Uncle Kong” Kampanat Na Songkhla, also known as “King Kong” among the foreigners on the island at the time, 30 years ago, the founder of New Heaven Dive School, who has always been missed. King Kong is the first ever Thai Divemaster on Koh Tao, one of the divers in the first movement of marine conservation. With the love he has to the ocean, he has been raising awareness in the environment issues since then. King Kong passed away in 1998 from cancer, at the age of 35 years old.
“King Kong Rock” is one of the best hidden and less known diving spots around the corner from Aow Leuk to Lang Khai bay. There are several large boulders covered with various corals and sea whips. It is a beautiful spot for whether snorkelling, freediving and scuba diving. The depth is around 5-28 metres with lots of coral and marine life. As not as many dive shops visit, it’s a great choice if you want to dive without any other boat traffic disturbing you.
The way to travel here you can go from Aow Luek by boat and use a path way from the cliff in Aow Lad. King Kong Rock has some big rocks and boulders, which are worth exploring. In the area around Lang Khai bay and Lad bay, there are also one of the boulderer and rock climber’s favorite spots.
