Tanote Bay – Koh Tao’s Dive Sites

Tanote Bay is known to be the place to go for rock jumping into the ocean of Koh Tao. The famous rock is positioned in the middle of the bay a short swim from shore which is home to some of the best marine life. Therefore, it is also a popular dive site, ideal for both scuba divers and free divers. The site has a gentle slope going down to over 20 meters depth with nice natural and artificial reefs to explore.

Tanote Bay is one of the most diverse dive sites on the island. There are variety of corals, both hard and soft corals, including large Barrel Sponges, Boulder and Brain Corals which are safe home of many species of common reef fish. Look out for Butterfly fish, Angel fish, Anemone fish, sea turtles, stingrays, and hundreds of Yellow Tail Barracuda along with Titan Triggerfish. For macro lovers, this is a great area to look for pipefish, cleaner shrimp and spider crabs. If you find yourself in the shallows at the right time of year you can also catch some juvenile black tip reef sharks.

Other than coral reefs, there are interesting objects to look out for at Tanote Bay.

– A sunken catamaran, at 18 meters deep.

Located just off the main dive site, the Catamaran lies on sand sea and provides a home to a variety of different species. Look closely and may find a Jenkins Whipray resting underneath in the shade, a banded pipefish along the structure or a small frogfish hiding away in one of the nooks and crannies.

– A sunken motorbike

The sunken old scooter has a very protective and aggressive Damsel fish that guards it from any scuba divers, so please beware.

– Several artificial structures

Artificial concrete cubes with a large variety of coral and lots of marine life hidden away in the cracks and crevices. It’s always fun to have a little swim through if you have great buoyancy skill. Swim around in this area and you will see the special Reef balls and Coral nursery structures at a depth of around 10 meters.

อ่าวโตนด เป็นที่รู้จักกันในการมากระโดดผาที่เกาะเต่า หินก้อนใหญ่ที่ขึ้นชื่อตั้งอยู่กลางอ่าว สามารถว่ายน้ำออกไปไม่ไกลจากหาดมากนัก และเป็นที่อยู่อาศัยของสิ่งมีชีวิตทางทะเลมากมาย ทำให้อ่าวโตนดเป็นจุดดำน้ำที่ฮิตมากในหมู่นักดำน้ำทั้ง Scuba และ Freedive จุดดำน้ำแห่งนี้ เป็นทางลาดยาวลงไปจนถึงความลึก 20 เมตร เต็มไปด้วยปะการังธรรมชาติและปะการังเทียมให้สำรวจ

อ่าวโตนด เป็นจุดดำน้ำที่มีความหลากหลายของสิ่งมีชีวิตจุดหนึ่งบนเกาะ มีปะการังหลายแบบทั้งปะการังอ่อนและปะการังแข็ง รวมถึงฟองน้ำขนาดใหญ่ กองหิน และปะการังสมอง ซึ่งเป็นบ้านของปลาตามแนวปะการังที่พบเจอกันบ่อยๆ สามารถเจอปลาผีเสื้อ(Butterfly fish) ปลาสินสมุทร(Angel fish) ปลาการ์ตูนอินเดียนแดง(Anemone fish) เต่าทะเล ปลากระเบน และปลาสากหางเหลือง(Yellow Tail Barracuda) หรือแม้แต่ปลาวัวไททัน(Titan Triggerfish) สำหรับคนที่ชื่นชอบสัตว์ขนาดเล็ก สามารถหาปลาไม้จิ้มฟัน(pipefish) กุ้งพยาบาล(cleaner shrimp) และปูแมงมุม(spider crabs) บางช่วงเวลาของปีในบริเวณน้ำตื้นนั้น สามารถเจอฉลามครีบดำเด็ก(black tip reef shark)

นอกเหนือจากแนวปะการัง อ่าวโตนดมีสิ่งที่น่าสนใจที่ควรไปหาอีก ดังนี้

– ซากเรือ catamaran จมอยู่ที่ความลึก 18 เมตร

ตั้งอยู่ไม่ไกลจากจุดดำน้ำหลัก ซากเรือนอนอยู่บริเวณพื้นทรายและเป็นที่อยู่อาศัยของสัตว์ต่างๆ ถ้ามองดูดีๆ อาจจะเจอปลากระเบนหางหนาม(Jenkins Whipray) นอนหลบอยู่ในมุมอับ สามารถเจอปลาไม้จิ้มฟัน(banded pipefish) ตามโครงเรือ หรือปลากบ(frogfish) ที่หลบอยู่ตามซอกมุม

– ซากมอเตอร์ไซด์

ที่ซากรถมอเตอร์ไซด์เก่านั้น จะมีปลาสลิดหิน(Damsel fish) ขนาดไม่ใหญ่มากอาศัยอยู่ เมื่อมีนักดำน้ำเข้าไปยุ่งจะชอบหวงถิ่นและก้าวร้าว โปรดระวังด้วย

– ปะการังเทียมหลายแบบ

ปะการังเทียมคอนกรีตก้อนสี่เหลี่ยม มีปะการังและสัตว์ทะเลหลายชนิดอาศัยอยู่และหลบตามรอยต่อช่องว่างต่างๆ ถ้าคุณมีสกิลการลอยตัวที่ดี สามารถว่ายลอดไปตามช่องได้ ถ้าว่ายต่อไปไม่ไกลจากจุดนี้ จะมีปะการังเทียมรูปโดมและโครงสร้างอนุบาลปะการังอยู่ที่ความลึกประมาณ 10 เมตร
