What goes around comes around. As humans in the modern world, we create endless innovations to make life easier. One of them, a plastic, has become both our masterpiece and our mistake. Did you know that a single piece of plastic can take around 400 years to decompose? Sadly, most of it ends up in the ocean, which covers 71% of our planet. Instead of bringing any benefit, plastic waste harms marine life, turning from a problem into a global pollution crisis. Countless sea creatures now face threats because of this. It’s time for all of us to make small changes that matter.
The truth is, we can never fully “win” against ocean plastic, because more appears every day. At New Heaven Dive School and the New Heaven Reef Conservation Program here in Koh Tao, we live by the ocean and call it our home. For many years, our team of divers has carried out conservation projects from reef monitoring, coral restoration, to underwater and beach clean-ups. And even though new plastic keeps arriving with every tide, we will try our best to protect our ocean home.
LEvery month, we host a Beach & Ocean Clean-up in Koh Tao. Together with volunteers, we collect plastic and rubbish carried in by the tides. Sometimes we clean the beaches, sometimes we dive beneath the waves through scuba diving, freediving, or snorkeling to remove trash from the reefs.
Where in Koh Tao do we organize to clean up?
The currents carry plastic and other rubbish onto different shores, so our clean-up location changes depending on the weather and tides. Sometimes we clean on land, other times underwater, always with one goal: to keep sea turtles from mistaking plastic bags for jellyfish, and to make sure our fish friends don’t get trapped in bottles or nets.
LWant to be a part of this fun-eco friendly activity?
Stay tuned for our monthly beach and ocean clean-up. This activity is free of charge, no need for money, but your smile and big heart to help our community. Shout out to Baan Talay Resort & Yoga for always supporting us with yummy snacks and refreshing drinks each time we’re on a tidy-up mission for the ocean.
These clean-ups are more than just picking up trash; they are days of teamwork, sweat, laughter, sometimes tears, but always love for the ocean. We may not be able to remove every piece of plastic, but we know every small action counts. And with every clean-up, we inspire more people to join us, because together, change becomes possible.
