Laemthien is one of the interesting scuba diving spots in Koh Tao, sitting on the east coast of the island. This beautiful bay offers two distinct sides for scuba divers to explore, each with its own unique underwater scenery and charm.

The first part is the southern side of Laem Thien Bay, which is relatively shallow, with depths ranging from 3 to 15 meters. It’s perfect for training dives or for those new to scuba diving who want to gain confidence in a calm and scenic environment. The gentle slopes, the sand bank area, vibrant coral formations, and playful reef fish make this area an enjoyable and educational dive site for anyone exploring the underwater world of Koh Tao.

The second part of the bay is the northern side, which is deeper and offers a more thrilling experience compared to the south. This area is perfect for scuba divers who want to enjoy fun dives, explore unique formations, and add a bit of adventure to their Koh Tao diving experience.

The highlight of the northern side of Laem Thien Bay is its underwater caves, featuring several exciting swim-throughs. It’s an incredibly fun and rewarding spot for adventurous divers, but it does require solid buoyancy control, making it more suitable for experienced scuba divers who feel comfortable navigating tighter spaces. The average depth around the cave and its swim-throughs ranges from 17 to 25 meters, giving you plenty to explore. For those completing deep dive training, you can even descend to around 30 meters, adding extra excitement and challenge to your scuba diving.

What marine life and other exciting things to see at this scuba diving spot?

Definitely the underwater rock formations itself, as they are truly stunning and create an incredible sight while you’re scuba diving. Exploring these massive structures gives you a powerful sense of how small we are on this planet and just how much of the world and the ocean we have yet to discover.

Laem Thien is also a fantastic dive site for spotting a variety of marine life. Keep an eye out for Moray eels, Pufferfish, Bumphead Parrotfish, Stingrays, Orange-spine Unicornfish, schools of Yellowtail Barracuda, Juvenile Harlequin Sweetlips, Batfish, Titan Triggerfish, Sea Turtles, and vibrant Nudibranchs. With so much life around every corner, it’s a wonderful reminder of why protecting Koh Tao’s underwater world is so important for future generations of divers.

New Heaven Reef Conservation at Laemthien

Apart from training and fun scuba diving at Laem Thien, our New Heaven Reef Conservation Team also conducts monthly scuba dives here for underwater conservation surveys. Whether it’s a reef survey, fish survey, or substrate assessment, we plan our dives whenever weather conditions allow. Collecting this data is essential, as every dive site in Koh Tao provides valuable information for understanding the overall health of the island’s coral reefs.

Beyond exploring the underwater world, we also organize beach clean-ups at Laem Thien when currents bring marine debris to the area. It’s a meaningful way for us to give back and protect the ocean through the conservation efforts we’re capable of.
