The First Whale Shark Encounter in Koh Tao in 2026
On the 2nd of January, the day began just like every other diving days in Koh Tao, slow, easy, and guided by the rhythm of the sea. We woke up without rushing and soon gathered with our diving friends at our favorite place to start the day: New Heaven Dive School. Laughter, coffee, and familiar faces filled the morning as divers of all levels prepared for another day underwater.
The conditions were just right. The sea was calm, the sky clear, and the weather felt welcoming, perfect for divers of every experience level. Without hesitation, the plan came together: Southwest Pinnacle, one of our all-time favorite dive sites. Known for its dramatic underwater landscape and surprises that often appear when you least expect them, it’s a site that never truly feels the same twice. We packed our dive gear and got ready to go.
On our way to Southwest Pinnacle, our all-time favorite dive site
During the boat trip to the dive site, we didn’t know what we would see. We didn’t know what might appear or how the dive would unfold. But that’s the magic of diving in Koh Tao. Stepping into the water always comes with a sense of trust, curiosity, and pure joy. At that moment, our hearts were simply full, ready to jump in, enjoy the fun dives, and trust the ocean to show us whatever it wanted to share that day.
“The ocean reminds us that good things don’t rush; they appear when the time is right.”
As soon as we arrived at the dive site, we set up our diving gear, checked each other, and jumped in. Everything felt easy. Somehow, the ocean was on our side that day, and without knowing it yet, we had already gotten lucky.
During the dive, something appeared in the blue. At first, we spotted a large blue-and-white dotted fish gliding calmly in the distance. For a moment, we were shocked and unsure of what we were seeing. It felt unreal, almost too good to be true. Our minds tried to catch up as we watched it move slowly, effortlessly, through the water.
Then it came closer.
In that moment, we knew. It was a whale shark.
A gentle giant, moving peacefully, completely unbothered by our presence. Time seemed to slow down as we hovered there, watching this beautiful creature glide past us. Its size was overwhelming, like around 7-8 meters long, yet its energy was calm and graceful. There was no rush, no fear, only awe.
We stayed still, breathing softly, letting the moment sink in. Encounters like this are never guaranteed, and that’s what makes them so special. In the heart of Koh Tao, at one of our favorite dive sites, the ocean had decided to surprise us in the most unforgettable way.
