Buddha Rock Koh Tao – A Hidden Gem Dive Site & Conservation
If you’re looking for a quieter side of Koh Tao, Buddha Rock is a hidden gem worth discovering. Sitting along the southwest coast of the island, Buddha Rock is both a scenic Koh Tao viewpoint above the water and a peaceful dive site below the surface. While it isn’t one of the most famous dive sites, that’s exactly what makes it so special.
Buddha Rock Viewpoint
Buddha Rock is a large rock formation in Chalok Bay that gets its name from its shape, which many people believe resembles a seated Buddha. Surrounded by the turquoise ocean, it creates a peaceful and picturesque scene that is visible from Chalok Beach and many viewpoints overlooking the bay.
It may not be a major tourist attraction, but its simple beauty is part of its charm. And just as the view above the water is impressive, the underwater world around Buddha Rock is just as rewarding to explore.
Buddha Rock Dive Site
Buddha Rock is one of Koh Tao’s lesser-known dive sites. Although it doesn’t usually appear on standard dive maps, it is a hidden gem for divers who enjoy relaxed dives and healthy coral reefs.
Located in Chalok Bay, the site is only a short boat ride from shore, with a few mooring buoys providing easy access. The average depth ranges between 10 and 14 metres, making it suitable for certified divers and ideal for relaxed exploration. Visibility varies depending on weather and sea conditions, but on a good day you’ll find colourful coral formations and plenty of marine life.

Because Buddha Rock receives fewer dive boats than many other Koh Tao dive sites, marine life often feels undisturbed, making every dive a little different and full of surprises.
Buddha Rock & Reef Conservation in Koh Tao
Buddha Rock holds a special place for us because it’s right on our doorstep.
Located just minutes from New Heaven Dive School, this dive site has become one of our regular locations for both diving and marine conservation work. Being so close allows our team to visit frequently, monitor reef health, and contribute to ongoing conservation projects.
Over the years, the New Heaven Reef Conservation Program has deployed several artificial reef structures around Buddha Rock and Chalok Bay. These structures provide additional habitat for reef fish and other marine life while supporting the long-term recovery of coral ecosystems.
Our marine conservation team has also conducted multiple Ecological Monitoring Program (EMP) surveys at this site, collecting valuable data that help us better understand and protect Koh Tao’s coral reefs. Every dive is an opportunity to learn, contribute, and become part of something bigger.
